Bike 'n Hike - Classroom Challenge Program
Bike ‘n Hike is an innovative team-building classroom program that has received rave reviews throughout the county. Bike ‘n Hike is a four-week program where an entire classroom is challenged to modify their transportation behavior and adopt greener, healthier habits by walking, biking, busing and carpooling to school. Students are given “tracker” sheets where they log their morning and afternoon travel to and from school each day.
Before the tracking period begins, classes are provided with Bike Smart! training by Ecology Action staff so students learn how to safely bike and walk to school. Additionally, we provide a classroom presentation to introduce the big ideas of Bike ’n Hike and explain why the program can be meaningful to all students.
The tracking period is an opportunity to discuss the many benefits of using sustainable transportation. Class time is often devoted to teaching greenhouse gas lessons and making the connection to personal transportation choices.
At the end of the tracking period, Ecology Action hosts a class celebration to recognize the class’ accomplishments. Overall, Bike ‘n Hike is a fun, practical experience for students to feel empowered by making a difference in their own transportation behavior.
