Boltage

Boltage is about changing habits, making it cool and using technology to bring you there.

Boltage is an innovative program that inspires kids through peer recognition and incentives to ride and walk to school. With every trip, kids improve their own health, our community and our environment. It’s easy! New to our county – Boltage is piloting at Gault Elementary School in the City of Santa Cruz this fall.

The backbone of the Boltage program is a solar-powered Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader that is mounted on a pole at the school site. Registered students get an RFID tag that attaches to their backpack.

As children pass under the reader with their RFID tags, a bell rings and light flashes, indicating that the trip is counted. Boltage uploads data to a secure website so families and school administers can see how many biking and walking trips school children have logged. Children earn privileges and prizes based on the number of trips tallied – the more trips logged the more chances to win.

This web-based system allows children and families to count the miles traveled, calories burned, greenhouses gases reduced, and gasoline unused each day, week and month for the entire school year.
