Special Event Recycling

Ecology Action’s Special Event Waste Reduction Program works in partnership with local agencies, venues and special events to implement comprehensive recycling and waste reduction programs at events throughout the Monterey Bay Area through technical assistance, outreach and education.

In addition to helping events and venues recycle bottles, cans and other recyclables, the program works to facilitate litter abatement efforts before and after special events removing additional materials from our environment, protecting our waterways and guarding against marine debris accumulation in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Our litter abatement efforts further ensures that collected recyclable littered materials are recycled and littered debris that cannot be recycled is properly disposed.  These efforts increase bottle and can recycling while helping to keep the Monterey Bay Area litter free.

This project is funded through a grant from the California Department of Conservation and implemented in partnership with Monterey Regional Waste Management District and with collaboration from Monterey County Health Department Recycling Services, the City of Monterey, the California Conservation Corps and our target events and venues. Special thanks to our current participating special events and venues! 
This year, the program has recycled an estimated 128,000 California Redemption Value (CRV) bottles and cans, 44,000 pounds of other recyclable material, thousands of used bike tires and dozens of bags of film plastic, while also diverting hundreds of wooden pallets and over 50 bags of clothing to reuse. And this is just the beginning!
