Tourism Recycling
To increase recycling opportunities throughout the Monterey Bay Area, Ecology Action catalyzed a regional partnership of local waste reduction and recycling agenciesand haulers to establish the Monterey Bay Area Regional Tourism Recycling & Litter Abatement Project. This project implemented convenient and consistent recycling program services at locations serving tourists, including: bars and restaurants, entertainment and hospitality venues, conference centers, hotels, racetrack recreation areas, parks and community events. The program was funded with local match contributions and two CalRecycle Beverage Container Recycling grants.
Program Outcomes
From 2008-2011 Ecology Action and program partners provided recycling assistance for 80 special events throughout the Monterey Bay Area, as well as76 bars, restaurants and hotels in Monterey County. The program provided trainingfor 1,750 staff on use of13,000 recycling bins distributed through the program. Training and infrastructure support helped tourism venues and businesses divert from the landfill 601 tons of waste. Diversion rates for events and businesses were very significant. For example, the Big Sur Marathonincreased its diversion rate to 92%.
