The Safe Routes to Schools planning process is a partnership between the Transportation Agency for Monterey County, City of Salinas, Monterey County Health Department, Ecology Action, and the Salinas City, Salinas Union, Alisal, and Santa Rita School Districts. The goal of the project is to improve safety for students biking and walking to 44 schools in Salinas. Community input is the foundation of the planning process and will be sourced from four community meetings as well as walking audits held at each school.

Following the public input phase in 2020, the planning team will create a list of recommendations to improve safety around each school. This will include infrastructure recommendations such as new sidewalks, improved crosswalks, and signage, as well as program recommendations such as bike and pedestrian safety education, crossing guards, drop-off zone management, and school carpooling. The draft list of recommendations will be shared with the school community in spring of 2021, and the community will have the opportunity to give input on the project list.

In spring of 2021, the planning team will also host several pop-up infrastructure demonstrations in Salinas. Pop-ups are temporary installations of traffic safety improvements such as new crosswalks, traffic calming measures and protected bike lanes. This is an opportunity for the community to try out new infrastructure and give input on whether they would like to see the project installed permanently. Stay tuned for information on pop-up dates and locations.

The final plan is expected to be completed in early 2022.

School Audits

School audits will be held at 44 schools in Salinas in spring and fall of 2020 to identify safety issues around each school site. These observations will provide the basis for project recommendations at each school.  Fill out the form at the top of the page to be notified when audits are scheduled.

Due to concerns about COVID-19, the Safe Routes to Schools public meetings on March 18th and April 7th will be postponed until fall 2020. Safety is the highest priority for the Safe Routes to Schools Planning team, and we want to be proactive to keep our community safe and slow the spread of the disease. Please check back for updates on new fall meeting dates, and use the Street Story tool below to share any comments you have about safety around your school.
